While much of the world is celebrating Lunar New Year, many are in mourning as 10 people were shot and killed at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, California. Reports say the mass shooting happened at a popular ballroom dance club on Saturday at 10:22p PT.

At least another 10 people are in the hospital. "There are at least 10 additional victims that were transported to numerous local hospitals and are listed in various conditions from stable to critical,” said Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Monterey Park is a hub for Asian supermarkets and restaurants, and per the city’s website, nearly 66% of residents are Asian American.

No description of the gunman was provided and a motive has not been confirmed. According to Capt. Meyer, the gunman “fled the scene and remains outstanding.”

Monterey Park’s Lunar New Year celebrations for Sunday have been canceled for safety reasons and out of respect for the victims.
