At least 11 people were killed at a Filipino community festival in Vancouver
On Saturday, at least 11 people were killed, ranging in age from 5 to 65, at a Filipino community festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Dozens more were injured.
Attendees were were at the Lapu Lapu Festival, an event that commemorates Datu Lapu Lapu, an Indigenous hero from the Philippines who resisted colonization and defeated Spanish forces.
After he was restrained by several festival-goers, Kai-Ji Adam Lo was arrested and charged with eight counts of second degree murder after he drove an SUV through the crowd. According to multiple reports, police have ruled out terrorism as a motive.
“Why us — why they would harm such a beautiful community?” Kris Pangilinan, a festival merchant, said per The New York Times. “It’s definitely something that I’m going to have to live with for the rest of my life. And we will just pay tribute to those affected and those who died.”
According to reporting from NPR, a list of victims has not been released, as some victims have not been identified yet.
